Troubleshooting Subscriber Management/PPPoE

Besides turning on authd traceoptions, what can I do to debug PPPoE subscribers failing to come up?  I am getting a "reason: ppp subscriber-mgr-activation-failed" however that error is rather generic.  How can I get more details?  Thank you.

Hi sean@kndy.nert

Greetings I would recommend the following:

A. Capture shmlog (before capture, clear history shmlog)

clear shmlog entries logname all
clear shmlog statistics logname all

>show shmlog statistics logname all
>show shmlog entries logname all

Then you can review the information to find any recent errors

B. Besides authd you need smgd & jpppd traceoption when observing subscriber-mgr-activation-failed counter increasing, and then disable those once finished.

jpppd trace:
set protocols ppp-service traceoptions file jpppd-trace
set protocols ppp-service traceoptions file size 100m
set protocols ppp-service traceoptions level all
set protocols ppp-service traceoptions flag all

smgd:
set system processes smg-service traceoptions file smgd-trace
set system processes smg-service traceoptions file size 100m
set system processes smg-service traceoptions level all
set system processes smg-service traceoptions flag all

Let me ask you the following:

This was working before?

Any firewall filters that might be blocking the traffic?

Is the configuration complete? especially with the profiles? please check this KB

https://kb.juniper.net/InfoCenter/index?page=content&id=KB15736

Were you making any changes while the subscribers were online especially on the interfaces?

If yes, this is not recommended and you will have to restart the FPC to recover.
